English Thursday 16/12

Those of you who are not doing wikis or book discussion will do another assigment in groups.

Make a group of maximum 3 persons and choose one of the assignments below. Do it and prepare a short presentation of what you have come up with for next Monday.

1. 1. Go to the English and/or the American store. Observe what product you find and if they differ from “Swedish” products. Interview the shop keeper about the products. For example: which ones are the most popular? Who buys them? Etc. Write down all words you find that you don’t understand and look them up.

2. 2. Walk down the shopping street and write down every English word you can see on signs and in shop windows. In what context/stores are English used and in what context/stores are Swedish used? Compare. Write down the words you see, look up the ones you don’t understand.

3. 3. Visit an English or Irish pub (there are a few in town). Describe the interior of the pub, how does it look like? Ask them if they serve traditional food and what that traditional food may be. Also ask about what the word Pub means and about the pub culture.

4. 4. Visit a bookstore that sells English books (for example Hamrelius Bokhandel). Interview them about English books. Do they sell a lot of English books? Which genre is the most popular? Do many people read English books in general? Mostly younger or older people?

5. 5. Go to a supermarket and have a look at the products. Which products have text in Swedish and which products have names in English? Can you find products where the English word is used instead of the Swedish, for example if the word cereal is used instead of flingor etc. Write down the words you find and look up the ones you don’t understand.
