English, Thursday w. 37

Homework check

Witchcraft

In the novel, witchcraft will be an important theme. Go to the following pages and do the exercises. Write your answers in Google Docs, FROM THE START, and put them in your English folder. Name the document: "Witchcraft in Botswana"

1. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4705201.stm

- According to the short introduction, how is witchcraft used in Africa today?

There are two people from Botswana who have left comments. Scroll down, find them and read their comments (Mmabato and Botshabelo)

- Summarize their view on witchcraft in about 50 words each

Read the text, and then translate the following sentences into correct and sensible Swedish:
  • "It was rare for a public denunciation to result in a stiff sentence or mob violence."
  • "Sometimes the accusation did not name the witch directly, who was thereby required to revive or restore (from illness or misfortune) the suffering victim," the report reads."
  • "UNICEF also claims that presently, many populations indicate an expansion in witchcraft although this is difficult to measure."
  • "The coming of capitalism and the creation of wealth among a limited group has led to increased jealousy and envy. Such a context encourages the existence and frequency of accusations and, by extension, acts of extreme physical and psychological violence," UNICEF says."

This is from a blog written by a woman named Mary, who has travelled to Botswana with the Peace Corps to "save the world". She has written here about her encounter with witchcraft in Botswana. It's a long post, so below is a picture so you can find the correct place to start reading from (would have been a lot easier id she had devided her text into clear PARAGRAPHS!).

Read and explain:

- Give to or three examples of witchcraft that Mary has run into.
- What is her attitude to interfering when people says things she feels are completely "deluded" or wrong?
- Do you think her attitude is reasonable? What would you have done? Explain and motivate your answer.
